My Latest Photo Series: Beautiful Underwater Brides!

Underwater Brides

Underwater Bride – Bride in bridal gown underwater – claremont berkeley – berkeley wedding photographer

I’ve wanted to shoot a “trash the dress” bridal series for a while, but haven’t had the chance due to my hectic schedule. I love capturing real emotions from those joyous celebrations, but it’s also fun to be able to control it all the details and create something artistic and unusual. I have taken millions of shots of happy couples, but what is the story behind the bride swimming alone in the pool? I had to find out. I finally had the right team last Tuesday to go through with an underwater bridal shoot including a willing model and a hot day.

The Claremont Hotel in Berkeley was an amazing location to shoot at with a saltwater pool and beautiful trees and hills in the background. This was my first underwater bridal shoot, and I had not mastered the techniques of staying underwater long enough to get the photo, but not drowning. The wet dress was much heavier than we imagined and Nadja did an amazing job making it look natural to swim in it! Next time I’ll come better prepared with snorkel and mask and some weights to help us stat down in the water. It was definitely some of the most fun I have had while shooting, so I am very much looking forward to doing it again. Please send me any feedback about my new series and check back for more underwater shoots with beautiful brides!

  • Wow, those are some cool photos. I have done some underwater shots with high-school seniors, but never with a bride. Very tricky shooting as you noted, coordinating with the subject and making sure you can hold your breath long enough is not easy!
